The Official Code of Georgia, Section 19-16-15, provides the basis for how judges and child support officials in Georgia calculate and award child support. Child support is calculated and awarded based on several factors including the income of each of the parents and the time each spends with the children. In addition, other factors may be considered, such as unemployment of one or both parents, health insurance coverage and payments, educational costs and child care expenses. All of these factors, plus any unique circumstances that arise during a specific case, are considered when child support orders are developed and modified.
