The California Child Support guidelines provide guidance to judges or the local child support agency to determine how much child support should be paid by a parent. Under California law, both parents are mutually responsible to provide support for their minor children according to their means. The guidelines take into account the income of each parent, the time spent with the children by each parent and who is claiming the children as dependents on their taxes. In addition, the guidelines take into account who is paying for the health insurance for the children. There are many other factors that form the basis for the calculation depending on the circumstances of the parent.
