The Georgia Division of Child Support Services (DCSS) handles all issues involved with child support within its jurisdiction. The services they provide include reviewing and enforcing existing child support orders, providing online assistance with making and receiving child support payments, assisting with the establishment of paternity, working with out of state parents, and helping to locate absent parents. In addition, DCSS can help establish a new child support order or modify an existing order.
The state of Georgia provides online access for parents to keep track of actions taken on their child support case, track their child support account and even apply for services. In addition, Georgia allows a parent who is paying child support to make payments online. A parent may contact the Georgia Division of Child Support Services in order to have an existing child support order enforced. DCSS has the authority to enforce child support orders and can assist in finding an absent parent as well imposing penalties for failure to pay. The Official Code of Georgia, Section 19-16-15, provides the basis for how judges and child support officials in Georgia calculate and award child support. Child support is calculated and awarded based on several factors including the income of each of the parents and the time each spends with the children. In addition, other factors may be considered, such as unemployment of one or both parents, health insurance coverage and payments, educational costs and child care expenses.
